The eye finds the intact U.S.S.R. first—a familiar globe made suddenly specific by borders that no longer exist. Lithographed paper wraps the sphere, while brass details and a solid wood stand give the 16.5-inch form the warmth and steadiness of a well-made reference object. George F. Cram Company produced educational maps and globes for generations of American rooms; this Imperial World example dates broadly to the 1940s–1960s, when its political geography was current rather than historical. Those former national boundaries are the heart of the piece, preserving one composed view of the world before the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. It is both decorative and documentary, with the layered surfaces and earned presence of an object once meant to be consulted. On a writing desk or open bookcase among leather, linen, and collected volumes, turning the sphere can remain part of living with it.
