Forged steel rises into the suggestion of a family—abstract in outline, unmistakably human in relationship. Canadian sculptor Boris Kramer made "Family" in 2003 and identified this work as number 103; its certificate of authenticity remains with the piece. Kramer works with blacksmithing methods and without molds, hand-forging each sculpture so the repeated subject never becomes an identical object. That process is visible in the material's directness: four pounds of steel drawn into a narrow, twelve-inch-high form that feels both strong and tender. Named artist, year, identifying number, process, and COA give this exact sculpture unusually complete provenance at a domestic scale.
