The maternal figure draws the eye inward, held at a scale that feels personal rather than ceremonial. Émile Bellet signed and numbered "Maternité" 37 of 280, and a certificate of authenticity remains with this exact impression. The French artist, who lived from 1941 to 2022, worked in a color-led figurative lineage often discussed beside the Fauves—Matisse and de Vlaminck among them—without losing the distinct individuality of his elongated forms. This closed edition is more contained than many of Bellet's print runs, while the signature, number, and COA make its provenance unusually complete. At 18.75 by 21.5 inches, it asks to be approached closely, where the human subject can register before the art-historical reference. Beside a reading chair or above a small bedroom chest, its intimate proportions and tender subject would make a gracious, deeply personal center.
