Crail Pottery Multiglaze Stoneware Serving Bowl, 10.5 Inch

Color runs, gathers, and settles across this broad stoneware bowl, preserving the small surprises of the firing in every turn of its surface. At 10.5 inches across, it has the generous scale of a true serving piece, yet the glaze lets it stand empty with real presence. Crail Pottery made it in the East Neuk village of Crail, Fife, where the Grieve family's multiglaze work became a signature of the Scottish workshop. The bowl is both stamped and dated, making its origin part of the object rather than a story added later; the particular inscribed date has not yet been transcribed, so no narrower year is claimed. Handmade variation is precisely what makes this example singular—the meeting of clay, color, and heat could not resolve quite this way twice.
