Painted directly onto pressed tobacco leaf—a medium that demands a second look. The fibers remain present beneath the oil, and filtered light can draw out a translucency unlike canvas or paper. Niran's subject is equally unhurried: an Asian elder smoking, held in contemplation on the very material that deepens the scene's quiet logic. Dating broadly to the 1990s–2000s, the 11-by-13-inch work belongs to a Southeast Asian tradition of painting on tobacco leaf, though its more specific place of origin is unknown. That organic support makes this exact piece singular; another leaf could carry the same image, but never the same veins, edges, or surface. Small in scale and considerable in character, it rewards intimate viewing rather than distance. Place it in a study or reading corner where gentle, indirect light can reveal the leaf's structure without exposing the work to harsh sun.
