Owls have long symbolized knowledge and watchfulness — fitting, then, that this pair has spent decades keeping watch over someone's books. Designed by David Grossman and produced by Dave Grossman Designs Inc. of St. Louis in 1978, these bookends are cast in a textured resin/plaster composite and hand-finished to resemble carved wood.

The sculptural treatment is genuinely impressive: expressive eyes, layered feather detailing, and a strong silhouette that holds its own on a shelf. They sit at the intersection of mid-century modern and 1970s studio craft — equally at home in a traditional library or an eclectic, collected interior.
